Yes, really.

The Evergreen Line will be finished and operational by 2016, and this time the government means it.

Members of all levels of government were in Port Moody Wednesday to announce the very first contracts for the rapid transit line that was originally supposed to be running by now.

Langley’s Pedre Contractors Ltd. and Surrey’s Hans Demolition and Excavating are expected to break ground on their pre-construction work within the next couple of weeks.

“Today marks the start of a project that will positively impact Metro Vancouver for many years to come,” said Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore, MP for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam.

EL Partners, Kiewit/Flatiron Evergreen Line and SNC-Lavalin Inc.  have been shortlisted as potential contractors. Technical submissions are due in April.

The 11-kilometre rapid transit line is projected to serve 70,000 riders a day by 2012.
