Vancouver NPA Coun. George Affleck is calling for the Metro board to lay its cards on the table with a new motion to broadcast all board meetings live.

“(It’s an) organization that has a $614-million budget and here’s a board of directors that’s not voted in; they’re designated by each city,” said Affleck. “(It’s) one of the largest city halls in the province and has no transparency.”

The newly elected councillor hopes to gain the support of five Vision councillors to call for the broadcast of future meetings on television or online.

“I would be very surprised if (the Vision councillors) don’t support this motion because they are very boastful of how they say Vancouver is transparent,” he said.

Affleck insists the new technology won’t come at a huge cost to taxpayers, adding that the audio equipment is already installed and all they would need is a digital camera to stream the footage online.

“Transparency is about making (the meetings) available. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t do it.”
He will introduce the motion at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
