SURREY, B.C. - The New Westminster Police have been called in to investigate an incident in which a 16-year-old boy was injured by a police dog during an arrest in Surrey, B.C.
Police were investigating a break and enter last Saturday at a convenience store in a gas station when the dog was sent after the boy.
RCMP Chief Supt. Janice Armstrong says she's concerned about the injuries the teen suffered and she's put the dog handler on administrative duties while his dog has been removed from duty.
She says the external investigation by the New Westminster police will determine if the use of the police dog followed RCMP policy.
It's the second time this month police dogs have been in the news in B.C. after a man sued Vancouver police for injuries he suffered when a dog ravaged his leg during an arrest in June of last year.
As part of their defence, the police released a video on Monday showing the man smashing a transit bus window with a skateboard before fleeing when police were called.
