A family of four from Edmonton died Wednesday evening when their SUV lost control and collided with an oncoming tractor-trailer in B.C.’s Interior.

A 47-year-old man, his wife, 37, and their two children, a boy, 7 and a girl, 3, were killed in the crash, which occurred about 8:30 p.m. on Yellowhead Highway north of Barriere.

The family was driving to California.

“Road conditions at the time of the accident were icy and typical for this time of the year in this area,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve Frayne.

According to Mounties, the family’s Suzuki Grand Vitara was headed southbound when it lost control and slid into the path of the rig. The driver of the tractor-trailer received minor injuries.

“It is a devastating reminder for drivers to exercise caution on the roadways and to ensure their vehicles are prepared for the winter conditions.”

Police have not released the family’s identity.
