A human chain in shades of red, white and pink paraded the downtown streets Sunday afternoon to deliver a Valentine’s message.

Supporters of fair trade participated in a flash mob to educate and encourage shoppers to choose fair-trade-certified gifts this Valentine’s Day. Led by gorilla-costumed organizer Sasha Caldera, seventeen volunteers chanted while handing out fair-trade Valentine cards along Granville Street.

“The idea of fair trade is to help producers get a better price for the work that they do,” said volunteer Linda Yauk. “And not just the producers but everyone in the supply chain.

“It’s about getting people to think about how they’re spending their money and where their money is going.”

Fair-trade products can be found at most grocery stores and retailers such as Ten Thousand Villages.
